Harrogate is a spa town about 22 miles west of York, known for its Victorian and Edwardian stone villas, wide tree-lined streets and large gardens, alongside modern estates on the edges of town.
York Paving and Fencing designs and installs driveways, patios and boundaries for homeowners in Harrogate and nearby Wetherby. Here’s what’s worth thinking about locally:
Many Harrogate properties are built from local stone, and the surfaces around them look best when they respect that. For driveways, we often suggest tumbled or textured block paving in buff, brindle or grey tones, or a resin bound surface edged in setts. For patios, Indian sandstone is a natural partner for stone houses, while porcelain suits contemporary extensions and newer homes on the edge of town.
Front gardens on older streets can be larger than in York, which gives room for a turning area or parking for two or three cars. Whatever the size, a new or replacement front surface over 5 square metres generally needs to be permeable or drain to a lawn or border within your property, otherwise planning permission is needed. We design to that rule as standard.
Long boundaries, mature trees and gardens that slope towards the back are common in Harrogate. Closeboard fencing built on site copes well with the town’s exposed, higher ground, and we set posts deep in concrete. Where an old stone boundary wall has failed, we can rebuild sections and repoint using a mortar that suits the stone, or build new walls with matching piers and gates.
Since April 2023, Harrogate has been part of North Yorkshire Council, which is the highway authority for new or widened dropped kerbs. Approval is needed before any work is done on the pavement. If you live in a conservation area or a listed building, we will also suggest checking whether planning permission is needed for walls, gates or a new drive. We are happy to explain the process during the free site visit.
Harrogate is known for its mature trees, and many are protected by tree preservation orders or sit within conservation areas. Digging out for a driveway or patio near a large tree can damage its roots, so we check where trees are, design around root areas and, where needed, suggest you confirm with North Yorkshire Council before work starts. On narrower streets we plan deliveries and waste removal carefully; a skip placed on the road needs a permit from the council, which has to be in place before the skip arrives; on smaller jobs a grab lorry or bags can avoid the need for one.
We’ll come out to measure, check levels and drainage, and talk through materials. You’ll then get a clear written quote, with no pressure. If your project needs a dropped kerb or might be affected by planning or conservation area rules, we’ll tell you upfront.
