Selby is a market town on the River Ouse about 14 miles south of York, with Victorian terraces near the abbey, large post-war estates and many new-build homes on the edges of town and in nearby villages.
York Paving and Fencing designs and installs driveways, patios and boundaries for homeowners in Selby and nearby Tadcaster. Here’s what’s worth thinking about locally:
The ground around Selby is largely flat, and in many places it drains slowly after heavy rain. A driveway or patio that simply sheds water towards the house or the road will cause problems. We start every Selby quote by checking levels and how water moves across your plot, then design a fall to a border, a channel drain, a soakaway or a permeable surface such as permeable block paving or resin bound gravel.
For front gardens, a new hard surface over 5 square metres generally needs to be permeable, or drain to a lawn or border within your property, to avoid needing planning permission, so the drainage design and the planning rules go hand in hand.
Selby and villages such as Brayton, Thorpe Willoughby and Barlby have seen a lot of new housing. The patios and fences supplied with new homes are often the cheapest options: thin slabs on sand and lightweight panels on timber posts. Typical upgrades are relaying the patio on a full mortar bed, extending it to a usable size, and replacing panel fencing with closeboard or slatted fencing on concrete or heavier timber posts. If your home is still within a builder’s warranty period, it is worth checking whether any changes affect it before work starts.
Selby is now within North Yorkshire Council, which handles applications for new and widened dropped kerbs. We will help you plan the driveway around the crossing you are approved for and explain the steps involved.
Much of the land around Selby is managed by internal drainage boards, which look after the ditches and watercourses that keep low-lying ground dry. If a soakaway is not practical and water would need to go into a ditch or watercourse, the relevant drainage board’s consent may be needed. We will flag this early rather than design something that cannot be signed off. For waste, a skip on the road needs a permit from North Yorkshire Council; on smaller jobs a grab lorry or bags are often simpler.
We’ll come out to measure, check levels and drainage, and talk through materials. You’ll then get a clear written quote, with no pressure. If your project needs a dropped kerb or might be affected by planning or conservation area rules, we’ll tell you upfront.

Permeable block paving or resin bound gravel on a porous base often works well, but it depends on your soil and levels, so we check on site.
