Patios & Patio Installation in York

Beautiful, level patios that drain properly — in natural stone, Indian sandstone or porcelain — designed around how you actually use your garden.

A patio that suits your garden — and lasts

A patio is somewhere to sit in the sun, eat outside and connect your home to the garden. We start by looking at where the sun falls, how you move around the garden, what level the patio needs to be relative to your damp-proof course, and where water will drain.

Then we help you choose a material and layout that fits the style of your home — whether that’s a classic sandstone terrace for a period house or a crisp porcelain patio for a modern extension.

Patio materials we work with

  • Indian sandstone — natural colour variation, riven or sawn finishes, and a timeless look that suits most York homes.
  • Porcelain paving — dense, stain-resistant and very low maintenance, with crisp, consistent sizes for a contemporary finish.
  • Natural stone & Yorkstone-style paving — for traditional, characterful patios and paths.
  • Concrete flags & setts — cost-effective and hard-wearing for paths, bin stores and practical areas.

How we lay a patio

  • Set levels so the patio sits at least 150mm below the damp-proof course where possible
  • Excavate and lay a compacted crushed-stone sub-base
  • Lay slabs on a full mortar bed (no “dot and dab”) for strength and to prevent rocking
  • Build in a gentle fall away from the house so rainwater runs off
  • Use a slurry primer on porcelain for proper adhesion
  • Point joints with a suitable mortar or a modern jointing compound

Paths, steps and finishing touches

We also build garden paths, side-return paving, steps, raised patios with retaining walls, and edging for lawns and borders. Pairing a patio with a matching path and fresh fencing often transforms a garden in a single project.

Patios & Paths FAQs

What is the best patio material?

It depends on your style, budget and how much maintenance you want. Porcelain is the lowest-maintenance and very stain-resistant; Indian sandstone offers natural character; concrete flags are the most budget-friendly. We’ll show you samples and talk through the pros and cons.

Should patio slabs be laid on a full mortar bed?

Yes. We lay slabs on a full bed rather than spots of mortar, which supports the whole slab, prevents rocking and cracking, and stops water collecting underneath.

Does a patio need planning permission?

Most back-garden patios don’t need planning permission. Raised platforms more than 0.3m above ground level, listed buildings and some conservation areas can be different — we’ll flag anything to check.

How do you stop a patio from flooding?

We set a gentle fall away from the house and, where the ground is slow-draining, add a channel drain or soakaway. Getting levels right at the start is the key.

Can you extend or relay an existing patio?

Often, yes. If the existing base is sound we can extend it; if slabs are rocking or sinking, relaying on a new base is usually the better long-term option.
