Pocklington is a busy market town at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, about 13 miles east of York, with a historic centre and a lot of newer housing around it.
York Paving and Fencing designs and installs driveways, patios and boundaries for homeowners in Pocklington and nearby Dunnington. Here’s what’s worth thinking about locally:
Pocklington has grown a great deal, and many homes on the newer estates came with a single-width drive or a tarmac strip that is now too small for the household. Widening a drive in block paving or resin bound gravel, with a matching path to the front door, is one of the most common projects here. If the work includes a new or wider dropped kerb, the application goes to East Riding of Yorkshire Council as the highway authority, and approval is needed before any work on the pavement.
Front garden surfaces over 5 square metres generally need to be permeable, or drain to a lawn or border within your property, to avoid needing planning permission. We design to that rule on every front driveway.
Gardens on the Wolds side of town can rise or fall noticeably from the house. Rather than a patio that tilts or a lawn that is hard to use, we often suggest a level terrace next to the house with steps down to the garden, held by a low retaining wall in brick or stone. Retaining walls need drainage behind them, and taller ones need proper design; we will be clear about what is needed for your garden.
Estate gardens often have lightweight panel fencing that does not stand up to winter wind. Closeboard fencing built on site, or panels on concrete posts with gravel boards, lasts much longer. For gardens that back on to fields or open land, post-and-rail fencing and a sturdy gate are usually a better fit. If only part of your fence is damaged, see our fence repairs page.
Ground conditions vary around Pocklington. Towards the Wolds, chalk can drain more freely than York’s heavy clay, which can make a soakaway more practical; on lower ground nearer the town centre and the beck, drainage can be slower. We do not assume either way. We look at the soil when we dig and, where a soakaway is planned, size it to the area it serves. For skips on the road, permits come from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
We’ll come out to measure, check levels and drainage, and talk through materials. You’ll then get a clear written quote, with no pressure. If your project needs a dropped kerb or might be affected by planning or conservation area rules, we’ll tell you upfront.
