Resin Driveways in York

A smooth, seamless and permeable finish with the look of natural gravel — but none of the loose stones, weeds or puddles.

Why resin bound surfacing is so popular

Resin bound surfacing mixes natural aggregate with a clear resin, which is then hand-trowelled onto a prepared base. The result is a smooth, slip-resistant surface that lets water drain straight through — making it a good fit for front gardens where permeable surfaces are required.

  • Permeable when laid over a suitable porous base
  • No loose gravel to scatter onto paths and lawns
  • Wide choice of aggregate blends, from warm golds to cool greys
  • Seamless finish that suits modern and traditional homes
  • Wheelchair, pram and step-free friendly

Resin bound vs resin bonded — what’s the difference?

Resin bound aggregate is fully mixed with resin and trowelled smooth; it’s permeable and has no loose stones. Resin bonded means resin is spread on a solid surface and loose gravel scattered on top — it gives more texture but isn’t permeable, and stones can come loose over time. For most driveways we recommend resin bound.

The base matters most

A resin surface is only as good as what’s underneath it. Depending on the existing ground, we lay resin over a new porous asphalt or open-graded concrete base, or — where an existing tarmac or concrete drive is sound, stable and suitable — over the top after careful preparation. We’ll assess this honestly during the survey; laying resin over a cracked or moving base just transfers the problem.

We use UV-stable (aliphatic) resin so lighter colours don’t yellow in the sun, and edge the surface with block paving, steel or aluminium edging for a crisp finish.

Weather and installation

Resin needs dry conditions and suitable temperatures to cure properly, so we plan resin installations around the forecast. Once cured it copes well with British winters — its permeability means water doesn’t sit on the surface.

Resin Driveways FAQs

Is a resin driveway permeable?

Resin bound surfaces are permeable when laid on a porous base such as porous asphalt, so they can help a front driveway meet the permeable surfacing rules. Resin bonded (scatter coat) surfaces are not permeable.

Can resin be laid over my existing driveway?

Sometimes. If your existing tarmac or concrete is sound, stable and drains suitably, it may be possible after preparation. If it’s cracked, sinking or breaking up, a new base is needed. We’ll tell you honestly which applies.

Will a resin driveway turn yellow?

Not if a UV-stable aliphatic resin is used, which is what we recommend. Cheaper non-UV-stable resins can discolour in sunlight.

How do I maintain a resin driveway?

Brush regularly to clear leaves and debris, and give it an occasional wash with a pressure washer on a moderate setting. Prompt removal of oil spills helps keep it looking its best.

How much does a resin driveway cost in York?

We quote individually after a free survey. Cost depends on the area, whether a new base is needed, edging, drainage, aggregate choice and access.
