Porcelain Patios in York

Porcelain gives you a crisp, modern patio that shrugs off stains and needs no sealing — as long as it is laid the right way. Here is how we do it.

Why choose porcelain paving?

Outdoor porcelain is made from fine clays fired at very high temperatures, which makes it dense and absorbs very little water. In practice that means a patio that resists staining from barbecues, wine and leaves, does not need sealing and copes well with frost. It comes in consistent, accurately sized tiles, so you get clean, straight joints and a contemporary finish. Many ranges imitate natural stone, wood or concrete, and matching steps, copings and wall cladding are often available.

  • Very low maintenance: a brush and an occasional wash are usually enough
  • Highly stain-resistant and does not need sealing
  • Consistent colour and size for a sharp, modern look
  • Good for extensions with large glass doors, where the patio continues the indoor floor

How we lay porcelain properly

Porcelain absorbs so little water that ordinary mortar does not grip it well. Laid like sandstone, slabs can come loose. Our method is designed around the material:

  • Dig out and lay a compacted crushed-stone sub-base, with levels set at least 150mm below the damp-proof course where possible
  • Lay every slab on a full mortar bed — never spot-bedded
  • Paint the back of each slab with a slurry primer so it bonds to the bed
  • Build in a fall so water runs away from the house, with a channel drain at the threshold if needed
  • Cut with diamond blades for clean edges around drains, steps and walls
  • Fill joints with a suitable jointing compound or mortar and clean off residue straight away

Choosing the right porcelain

For patios, choose porcelain made for outdoor use, usually 20mm thick, rather than thinner indoor tiles. Check the slip-resistance information from the manufacturer, especially for shaded areas, paths and steps that stay damp. Larger tiles look striking but need a very flat bed and are harder to handle, while smaller sizes suit curved or irregular spaces. We are happy to bring samples so you can see them against your house in daylight.

Steps, edges and joining the inside to the outside

Porcelain works well with matching bullnose step treads, and with low walls clad in the same tile. Where you want the patio level with your floor inside, we need to manage water carefully: a level threshold usually needs a slot or channel drain next to the doors and the right falls across the patio. We will talk through what is achievable for your doors and damp-proof course before work starts. See also our main patios page and our guide to Indian sandstone if you prefer natural stone.

Looking after a porcelain patio

Sweep regularly to stop leaves and soil sitting on the surface, and wash down occasionally with warm soapy water or a pressure washer on a moderate setting. Most marks lift easily. Keep an eye on the joints, as weeds and moss are more likely to appear there than on the slabs themselves.

Porcelain Patios FAQs

Is porcelain slippery when wet?

Outdoor porcelain is made with textured finishes for grip, but slip resistance varies by range. We will point you to ones suited to your patio, paths or steps.

Does porcelain paving need sealing?

No. Porcelain absorbs very little water, so it does not need sealing.

Can porcelain be laid on an existing patio?

Only if the base underneath is sound, level and well drained, which is rare with older patios. In most cases we lift the old slabs and build a proper base.

Is porcelain more expensive than sandstone?

The tiles often cost more, and laying takes more care, so porcelain patios are usually a little more expensive. We will price both if you are undecided.

Can you match porcelain to my kitchen floor?

Some ranges come in indoor and outdoor versions, which makes a matching look possible. Bring the details of your indoor tile and we will help you find options.
