Fencing & Gates in York

Strong, straight, private fencing and gates for York gardens — installed with the right posts for exposed spots and finished to match your paving.

Garden fencing that stands up to Yorkshire weather

Most fences fail at the posts — rotten timber at ground level or posts not set deep enough to resist the wind. We set posts in concrete at a suitable depth, use pressure-treated timber, and recommend concrete posts and gravel boards where a fence is exposed or close to damp soil.

Fencing styles we install

  • Closeboard (featheredge) fencing — built in situ with rails and overlapping boards; one of the strongest timber fences for privacy.
  • Fence panels — lap, overlap and heavier-duty panels on timber or concrete posts.
  • Contemporary slatted / horizontal fencing — a modern screen that lets a little light and air through.
  • Hit-and-miss — boards on alternate sides, so it looks good from both gardens.
  • Post-and-rail & picket — for open boundaries, front gardens and paddocks.
  • Trellis toppers — extra height and a home for climbers.

Garden gates and side gates

We supply and fit timber garden gates, side gates and wider driveway gates, hung on proper posts with good-quality hinges, latches and locks so they close cleanly and stay square. Matching a gate to new fencing and paving gives a really finished look. See garden and side gates in York.

Fence replacement and repairs

Lost a few panels in a storm or got a leaning section? We can replace broken panels and posts, add gravel boards to lift timber off the soil, or replace a whole run when patching no longer makes sense. More on our fence repairs in York page.

Fence heights and boundaries

Under permitted development rules in England, fences, walls and gates can generally be up to 2 metres high, or 1 metre where they’re next to a highway used by vehicles (or the footpath of such a highway), without planning permission. Listed buildings and conservation areas may differ. It’s also worth checking your deeds and talking to neighbours about which boundaries are yours.

Fencing & Gates FAQs

Which fence is best for privacy and strength?

Closeboard (featheredge) fencing built in situ is one of the strongest timber options and gives full privacy. Pairing it with concrete posts and gravel boards adds longevity in exposed gardens.

Should I choose concrete or timber fence posts?

Concrete posts don’t rot and suit panel fencing in exposed spots; timber posts look more natural and suit closeboard and slatted styles. We’ll recommend what suits your boundary and budget.

How high can my garden fence be?

Generally up to 2m without planning permission, or 1m next to a highway used by vehicles. Different rules can apply to listed buildings and some conservation areas.

Can you remove and dispose of my old fence?

Yes. We can take down the old fence, remove old posts and concrete where needed, and take the waste away.

Do you install gates as well as fencing?

Yes — garden gates, side gates and driveway gates, made to fit the opening and hung so they close properly.
